Newland Bridge carries the A645 over the River Aire, between Airmyn and Selby – very close to Drax power station. As part of the local transport infrastructure, the bridge needs urgent, essential repairs. Closing the bridge is the only practical solution to enable the work to be carried out.
After PBS Construction won this contract for this work, Peter Smurthwaite, Managing Director said, “We are very pleased to have been awarded another prestigious civil engineering contract contract from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
“The scheme will give continuous employment for upwards of 20 of our employees for the duration of the contract.
“We will benefit the local economy by using other local suppliers, plant hire companies and sub-contractors during the works.
“PBS will engage with local schools and organisations who would benefit from the knowledge of how this scheme will be constructed and will encourage pupils to consider a career in the construction industry.
“This Yorcivils Framework contract quite rightly requires that we give consideration to improving the employment and skills in the industry in the local region, which will also benefit our company in the long term.
The Newland Bridge scheme is scheduled to start once the major Selby bypass repairs are complete.
